BRITAIN EXPOSED

Britain has been forced to remove the mask at last. The masks cannot be worn for too long and the decision to freeze aid to Sri Lanka in the name of violation of human rights does not come as a surprise to us. Sri Lanka should expect economic sanctions imposed on the country if the Sri Lankan government continues to ignore the British "solution" to the so called ethnic problem. Britain does not want to see LTTE defeated, though they may not like Prabhakaran, as they think that without the terrorists they would not be able to impose their solution on us. As Prabhakaran is gradually losing his grip (however he still has the scotch balls supplied by the Aussies rather the Poms) due to operations by the Sri Lankan armed forces, Britain has decided to intervene in the affairs of Sri Lanka with no hesitation.

It has to be mentioned that we never got any aid as such from UK or any other western country. What we had been given were loans, and we know that these loans were tied to various conditions. In fact by giving loans to so called underdeveloped countries the western countries and Japan boosted their economies.

As we have said on number of occasions it was Britain that created the so called ethnic problem by favouring the Tamil elites, especially the Jaffna vellalas, who had been brought by the Dutch for their tobacco plantations, against the Sinhala Buddhists. As franchise was introduced gradually these privileges given to the Tamil elites had to be withdrawn, and it was interpreted by the British as well as the Tamil elites as discrimination against the Tamils in general.

Britain having created the problem wants to "solve" it by giving the northern and the eastern provinces to Tamil racism, thus depriving the Sinhalas those two provinces. The colonialists who think no end of their "empire" are hell bent on imposing their federal solution to their problem. The "solution" will only create another problem, and finally Tamil racism would triumph in the central and uva provinces as well.

The so called violation of human rights is only a pretext for the British to intervene directly in the internal problems of Sri Lanka. The British rulers who lied to their own people when they wanted to invade Iraq are capable of doing anything to safeguard their interests. It is laughable to hear British who do not allow the Muslim women to wear the "veil", talking of human rights violations on ethnic basis in Sri Lanka. The British interprets in Sri Lanka are mainly the promotion of Tamil racism and working against Sinhalathva. Britain and many other western countries, especially the Reformist countries, are interested only in propagating the Western Judaic Christian culture of Christian modernity, and in Sri Lanka have identified the Sinhalathva as their enemy. They are prepared to support Tamil Hindus until Sinhalathva is defeated or weakened.

As we had said it was Britain that operated behind Norway. The recent appointment of a so called All Party Parliamentary Group by the British Parliament to bring "peace to Tamil with dignity and justice" is only another step in the direction of promoting British interests in Sri Lanka. The British may be thinking of sending another Colebrook Commission to Sri Lanka as if we are still their colony. Britain has removed the mask that they had been wearing, and desperately taken upon themselves the task of imposing their so called solution to the "ethnic problem" they created. The government of Sri Lanka should protest against the high handed manner in which Britain is acting, and should make the people aware of what is happening, and get ready for any eventuality to protect the sovereignty of the country.

The SLFP proposals are in vain if they are to solve the so called ethnic problem of the country, as there is no such problem but only a problem created by the British. However, power, not legislative but administrative power could be devolved to the Districts in order to facilitate development of the country. However, districts have to be reconstituted considering the resources, climate etc., and the number of districts could be increased to about forty. The senate is not going to solve any problem, but will create additional problems. However, instead of a senate there could be district committees in the Parliament comprising members elected from each district. The Unitary character of the state would thus be preserved without delegating any legislative powers to any instrument other than the Parliament.

The British created the problem by giving the false sense of equality to the Tamil elites by giving more power at the centre than what they should have been given. It is this impression that led the Tamil elite to believe that they should have equal representation at the centre with the Sinhalas. The fifty fifty proposals of GG Ponnambalam stemmed from this false impression and later when Chelvanayakam realised that it was not possible to have equal share of power at the centre, with the introduction of universal franchise, he wanted a separate state. It is this false impression created by the British that has to be corrected, and we may make use of the SLFP proposals to achieve that objective.

However, Ranil Wickremesinghe, the leader of the party that acts as the agent of the western Christian countries, wants those countries and India to approve the "solution" of the SLFP to the so called ethnic problem. When he says the President should consider their views he means exactly that. Ranil Wickremesinghe who spends most of his time abroad would not have known the proposals at first hand. However, if he was genuinely interested in the proposals he could have obtained the necessary information from various websites or from a friend in Sri Lanka.

There is no need to consider the views of the others in solving the so called ethnic problem created by the British. Though it was the British who created the problem, it does not make them eligible to be the solver of the problem. In fact it is suicidal to get advice from the creator of the problem, as the latter would always have vested interests. Britain would never accept that they created the problem, and would try to blame the Sinhalas for the so called injustices caused to the Tamils. Had not the British given privileges to the elite Tamils in Sri Lanka since the days of the legislative assembly this so called problem would not have arisen.

No problem can be solved without knowing what the problem is. This is a "fundamental axiom" in Sinhala Buddhist culture, and Ranil Wickremesinghe who is alien to that culture would not have known it. Instead of studying the problem, he is satisfied with echoing the views of his maters in the west, and he wants the President also to emulate him. Let us try to understand the problem before we attempt to solve it.
